Expansion To Dunkeld

At Easter this year ‘Batavia’ of Ballinluig ‘stamped its brand’ in Dunkeld by opening a new shop on the corner of the town’s Bridge Street and Brae Street. Nick and Airin Gilmour set up Batavia two and a half years ago in Ballinluig, beside the A9. Importing hardwood furniture from Indonesia, the business has built up a wide geography of customers from Tongue in the north, to London in the south. Some of its furniture has even been despatched to the Bahamas.

The new shop in Dunkeld is furnished with many wonderful pieces of Indonesian furniture. The couple also has a large selection of giftware and accessories from Indonesia. The setting of the shop and its layout complement the wide range on display and the prices do not seem to be too expensive. “We realised that we were limited with the range of products that we could sell in our current location and had been browsing the papers for a new location,” Nick told Comment. “When we saw that Dunkeld Interiors was for sale we thought it would be an ideal position. We are also great fans of the town, and now - here we are.”

Batavia is also expanding into Batavia Holiday Cottages as Nick and Airin have been busy renovating a two bedroom bungalow on their farm site between Blairgowrie and Dunkeld. To this they can now add the flat above their new shop in the heart of town.

With three twin room and two doubles, the flat sleeps 10 and is furnished with Indonesian furniture, from the dining table set to the four poster bed and other occasional furniture. Both properties will soon be seen on their web page www.visitdunkeld.co.uk

Ballinluig is still open for business and is the ideal place to display the larger pieces of furniture. Batavia currently has a four poster bed and antique 8ft bed on display as well as tables, chairs, day beds and garden furniture.

Batavia Dunkeld (01350 728664) is open Monday to Saturday (closed Tuesdays) 10.00a.m. to 5.00p.m. and Sunday 12.00 to 4.00p.m. Batavia Ballinluig is open weekends only, Saturday 10.00a.m. to 4.00p.m. and Sunday 12.00 to 4.00p.m.
