Freeze Announced on Local Council House Purchase

On 2 February P&K Council announced that certain areas had been designated as having ‘Pressured Area Status.’
These areas include Aberfeldy, Acharn, Fearnan, Glenlyon, Kenmore, Ballinluig, Grandtully, Logierait, Blair Atholl, Kinloch Rannoch, Pitlochry, Dunkeld and Birnam. The implication of this is that ‘right to buy’ for some tenants is now suspended for a period of 5 years. This is to help to preserve the stock of social-rented housing as the demand for such accommodation substantially exceeds supply.

Affordable Housing Need
MSP JohnSwinney commented: “The availability of public housing in these areas has become a serious problem and has affected a great number of people living - and who want to live - in these communities.
“The success of Perth and Kinross Council in securing Pressured Area Status will assist in tackling the problem. There is a need to substantially expand the amount of affordable housing and take steps to address the problems faced.
“I will certainly be doing what I can to assist all stakeholders in this matter.”
