Transports of Delight

Two local ladies with a shared passion for horses, Julie Eley and Diane Scrimgeour, have launched Perthshire Horses, a new business venture in Blair Atholl.

Julie has over thirty years’ experience with horses, having been trained by Miss Georgie Henschel. Together they saw a gap in the local market for providing horse drawn transport and, having just finished renovating a Victorian governess cart, decided to put their horses to work to earn their own keep.

Blair Atholl being steeped in history is a centre for many weddings and so, they calculated, what better way to arrive at for the nuptial than in a horse drawn carriage. Along with this service they also cater for any romantic occasion with carriage picnics in the countryside.

“Currently we are renovating a beautiful spider phaeton which we hope will be ready for a trip by a special guest Santa in December,” Julie told Comment. “We are also planning to run training courses for the more adventurous who would like to learn how to carriage drive themselves, with special days for children to learn this lost art.”

Both ladies do all this alongside full time jobs, for Julie works as a social care officer and Diane works for Atholl Estates . Yet they still manage to find time to take the occasional horse for training as well.

Besides their two coloured carriage driving horses they have two up-and-coming stars - two new forest ponies which they expect to see driving from next year.

“So far local interest and support has been great and we have caused a bit of a stir at several gala nights,” Julie reported.

Julie and Diane are both very friendly and approachable for questions and enquiries on either 01796481260 or 07772045433. Thanks to Julie’s brother Mark, they also have a have a comprehensive website - www.perthshirehorses.com
