Dunkeld Sawmill Awarded 'Investors In People' Accolade

Perthshire Timber Company in Dunkeld, the privately owned sawmill which is part of the family business group Mearns Sawmills, has been awarded IIP status.

The company, which was founded in 1942, has been trading successfully for over 50 years.

Manager Iain Gordon, who joined his mother Valerie and his father Murray in the business 11 years ago, had the vision to embark on the Investors in People Award Scheme, which has culminated in the presentation of their award by MP Pete Wishart.

Iain told Comment, “the business is operating in an extremely competitive market and therefore a high level of efficiency is essential. Modern machinery requires a highly skilled workforce and continuous training is necessary as modifications and improvements are made to the log lines.

" In this working environment there is a strong emphasis on health and safety. We are lucky to have such a good workforce. They are the reason we have been given this award”

The sawmill employs 20 staff and its core business is cutting and supplying boards, bearers and blockwood to pallet manufacturers throughout Britain. It also supplies fencing materials both locally and further afield, and can process large or small orders quickly and efficiently.

The mill is traditionally run with less wasteage than the larger chipper mills. Iain said, “we are perfectly situated for the business we are in,as we are surrounded by our product with all the timber in Highland Perthshire and we have great road links with the A9 to the motorway network.”

In presenting the award on Friday 27 January, MP Pete Wishart told the Gordons and their assembled workforce “I am delighted to be here to present this award to you. I would like to congratulate you all on the achievement.”
