Partnership Promotion Initiative Launched in Birnam
The premiere of a DVD showcasing the stunning scenery of Perthshire Big Tree Country from the air, took place on Wednesday 12 March at the Birnam Institute.
The screening, hosted by Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust (PKCT), was followed by an announcement by Patrick Elsmie, Managing Director of The Gleneagles Hotel, launching a new guest contribution scheme Supporting Big Tree Country. This is an innovative partnership between Gleneagles Hotel and PKCT that helps uphold the vision of preserving and enhancing the area for the enjoyment and appreciation of future generations.
Guests at the hotel are encouraged to invest in the area through a voluntary opt-out levy that is added to their bill at the end of their stay. |

Local Production
The DVD, produced by local company Speakeasy Productions from Stanley, offers viewers the chance to experience the spectacular Perthshire countryside through the lens of the latest high definition camera attached to the underside of a helicopter. Developed as part of the Big Tree Country Heritage & Access Project, the DVD is introduced by Scone born plant collector David Douglas (after whom the Douglas fir is named) who, in the early 19th century, helped shape the Perthshire countryside of today.
Councillor Bob Ellis, PKCT Chairman said: “The DVD offers a unique preview of all that Perthshire Big Tree Country has to offer. What’s particularly amazing is that the countryside we enjoy today didn’t just happen by accident but is the result of a few adventurous Scots who travelled the globe looking for new plants to send back to the UK. This DVD is a fitting tribute to the bravery of those plant collectors and the vision of the landowners, who created this fantastic resource.”
Jeremy Hewitt, head of production at Speakeasy, added: “The Big Tree Country programme has been an exciting and rewarding project to work on. Everyone involved felt really passionately about it – both in terms of the use of the very latest technology and the landscape we were filming which is right on our doorstep. We’re very proud of the result which is a stunning showcase of the Perthshire countryside looking at its absolute best across the seasons.”
The DVD will be circulated amongst tourism providers in and around Perthshire and will also be used to promote the area to walking groups, community groups, and other interested parties. It will be distributed at the Outdoor Show at the Birmingham NEC in March and be used for marketing at other events during the coming year.
