International Musos Available for Local Tuition

Recent arrivals to the area are pianist and conductor Norman Beedie and his singer wife Diana Stuart. Although born in Dundee, Norman’s family settled in Aberfeldy some forty-five years ago and he has spent many holidays in the area. New Zealand-born Diana has Scottish ancestry and feels that “coming to live in Perthshire is like coming home!”

The couple (pictured right) studied and worked in Italy and France with some very prestigious musicians such as Tito Gobbi, Irene Joachim and Nadia Boulanger. “Gobbi was an inspiration and willingly shared his extensive performing experience,” recalled Diana who subsequently appeared on Italian Television and Radio Vaticano before becoming the vocal assistant to Irene Joachim, one of France’s most revered sopranos.

Of particular interest to Highland Perthshire residents is that Diana also studied Scottish Song with Petrine Stewart, the mod gold medallist. Diana has performed in New Zealand, UK, Europe and Ukraine as well as on NZBC radio and television and ITV.

Norman also studied in Italy following studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, “Although my most important influence was undoubtedly Nadia Boulanger who taught and advised me in Paris and then appointed me to the teaching staff at the Conservatoire Americain at Fontainebleau,” he told Comment.

Nadia Boulanger, who had worked with many of the great musicians of the twentieth century, has described Norman as “...a real artist, a real musician...”. In 1980 Norman was made Assistant Director of the Conservatoire Americain.

Teaching
Following a fulfilling performance career in opera and oratorio, Diana is now concentrating her energies into being a vocal tutor and vocal adviser having taught at London University.

Norman is active as a pianist and conductor and has performed in UK, Europe and the Far East as well as conducting in UK with the City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra, Classic East Orchestra and Ukraine with the National Symphony Orchestra. He is also a professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and is currently writing a book on the training of musicians with particular focus on pianists.

Norman and Diana have wide teaching experience of all age groups - from absolute beginners to experienced professionals. They are eager to use their experience within the community of Highland Perthshire and Tayside and can be contacted on 01887 830448 or by email at norman.beedie@btinternet.com .
