Jane Takes Over The Wheel
A change at the wheel of Broad Oak School of Motoring occurs on 1 August when Jane McBride takes over the business from Hugh Ross.
Hugh officially retires on 31 July, having completed 23 years as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) – the last 12 ½ of them based in Aberfeldy. He claims to have enjoyed every minute of the job.
He told Comment: “I have been humbled by the support received from the local community. I am sad to finally hang up the ‘teaching boots’, but I am really delighted to hand over the business to the safe pair of hands that Jane provides.”
Hugh also played a part in her training to become an Advanced Driving Instructor. He said of her: “Jane is a ‘people person’; she is very well known in the community, and she is so enthusiastic about her new role in Aberfeldy and district.” |

Hugh was heartfelt in his thanks for the tremendous support the driving school has been given in the locality, and he fully expects that Jane will also receive this.
For her part, the incoming instructor expressed her delight in embarking on the new career along with warm gratitude for all the assistance that Hugh had rendered to her with the venture.
The Brand
The name Broad Oak comes from a village in Herefordshire in which Hugh lived when he qualified as an ADI and he believes it has a good reliable sound to it and trusts Jane will maintain the reputation of the business.
Jane is retaining the ‘Broad Oak’ label, but she will have a hew headboard giving her home telephone number (01887 829427) - but she is also contactable on her mobile (077311 65788)!
She said: “This great opportunity arose right on my doorstep when I was looking at options and planning for the future as my boys grow up through their schooling. I was really fortunate to be in the right place at just the right time.”
Qualifications
On two previous occasions Jane had helped friends informally to build their driving confidence up sufficiently for them to pass their driving tests.
“This was in two quite different localities; I found it a pleasurable and satisfying challenge, and so the idea had great appeal to become a qualified instructor,” she added.
When fully qualified as an ADI, she will, naturally, continue to offer Pass-Plus training to drivers who passed their driving test within the preceding 12 months.
This part of her service is expected to be available from September/October of this year. Motorway and city driving tuition is available at any time.
