New Kennels Enterprise

Nancy Reid was born and raised in Fife. On a school trip at the age of 8 to see Pitlochry Dam, Nancy saw a horse in a field beside the dam and decided to climb the hill to get closer to it. As she stood on the hill with the horse, she decided then she would - some day - come and live in Pitlochry.

After living in various places around Scotland, she finally got her wish. Nancy applied to Atholl Estates in Blair Atholl for a house and was invited by the factor to view a property on the estate. However, she took the wrong road and ended up on the wrong side of the hill from the vacant property. She could see the house on offer, just across the valley and took one look and decided “I’ll take it.” It was to be one of the best decisions Nancy ever made.

She and her son Marcus have now lived in Blair Atholl for six years and she loves Highland Perthshire. Her main passion, she would say, is her dogs and she has been breeding pointers and setters for over 30 years. With outbuildings around her property Nancy decided to set up a boarding kennel for dogs, after numerous requests from friends and neighbours to care for their animals when they were on holiday.

Having previously run a very successful boarding kennel in Tain in Ross-shire, this was something Nancy knew she could do - and do extremely well. She has been visited by the dog warden from Perth & Kinross Council and the licence is now pending. She told Comment: “I am in contact with the Council whilst negotiations on legislation are being looked into in order to grant me my licence.”

There are five pens and runs for boarding dogs and a well equipped grooming parlour. Nancy stresses, however, that dogs over 10 years of age are given special treatment, they are not housed in kennels but given the comfort of a bed in the house.

The surrounding hills and glens are perfect for exercising the dogs off the lead and Nancy said: “All dogs are walked, not just put in outdoor runs, the dogs are encouraged to interact with my dogs and the other borders, some enjoy it so much they don’t want to go home with their owners.”

Along with the boarding kennels, Nancy also offers puppy and dog training classes. These can either be one-to-one or in small groups. Or for those looking for someone to care for their dog whilst they are at work or on a day out where their canine companion can’t accompany them, she offers her ‘Dog Creche’. Dogs are treated to a fun day, they are fed, walked and can be groomed and clipped. Nancy is happy to collect and deliver home, dogs booked into the Dog Creche.

A further new venture for Nancy is ‘Party Animals’. She will come along to your event with her team of animal entertainers who will perform for their audience, an act enjoyed by children and adults alike.

A visit to Nancy’s home and kennels leaves you in no doubt, she is a real animal lover. Her home is alive with dogs and laughter, it’s a great place for canines. To speak to Nancy about the services she offers or for any advice on your dogs, call her on 01796 481359.
