Business Boost in Pitlochry's Mill Lane

WHEN IT COMES TO SHOPPING , Pitlochry has much more to offer than meets the eye. Just step a few yards off Atholl Road and there is a host of businesses catering to the needs of locals and visitors alike.

Mill Lane is a case in point. In addition to the attractions of the picturesque Mill Wheel (and attached Inn!) Pitlochry Pet Supplies has been established in the Lane ever since it was redeveloped from the old Alba Place. Next door, and entering in to its sixth year of trading at this site, is Treasure Island Wholefoods. Now, two new ventures are opening up alongside the Moulin Burn.

Alex Allan is a well-known and popular hairdresser in the town. Previously manager of The Hair Studio in Atholl Road, Alex took over Pitlochry Pet Supplies four years ago, whilst continuing on a part-time basis under new ownership at the Studio. Her Pet Supplies business included a Pet Grooming Service but, as Alex says, “Grooming pets is not at

all similar to grooming people. Much as I love animals, that side of the operation proved to be a real distraction from our core business”. The result was that Alex found herself with a space in her premises urgently in need of a purpose. Keeping the business in the family, Alex’s husband Kenny has carried out all the work necessary to comply with Building regulations and access requirements. The result is Alex Hair Design, opening at 2a Mill lane at the beginning of April.

As Alex says, “Moving out on my own in the hairdressing field is a natural progression and I am really looking forward to the new challenge”.

Meanwhile, next door at Treasure Island, there are exciting new developments in Complementary Therapies. For a number of years, Nik Imrye, Herbalist, Iridologist and Reiki Practitioner, has been visiting the Mill Lane premises for consultations and has built up a very successful practice. Hilda Stagg, joint proprietor of Treasure Island, told Comment that “We used to just kick my husband, Garry, out of his office once a month so that Nik could see his patients with a degree of comfort and privacy. Recently we decided that Garry could work just as well from a corner of the storage area and, more usefully, could pursue some of our other business interests from his office at home. The result is that it is no longer ‘Garry’s Office’ and the space is now available for other therapists to see their clients”.

The first of these is Tia, who offers a range of therapies including Indian Head Massage and, Hypnotherapy/Psychotherapy. She is also a qualified Reiki Master. Tia has been working in Highland Perthshire for several years, but found that Enochdhu was just a bit too remote for many clients. “When I heard that Hilda and Garry had this space available, it seemed too good an opportunity to miss” she said.

Indian Head Massage is not just for your head, but also the back, neck, shoulders, throat and face. It helps relieve stress, tension, and headaches and may stimulate hair growth. Reiki is a gentle hands-on healing which can help with anything from stress-related problems to the most serious conditions. Both these treatments are non-invasive and are carried out fully clothed. Tia stresses that she is not a diagnostician but that her therapies can and do work alongside conventional medicine, both in overcoming its possible side-effects and helping the body to heal itself.

For information on complementary therapies or to make an appointment please call in to Treasure Island or telephone 01796 473074. To make an appointment for Alex Hair Design, call in or telephone 01796 474205.

Garry, in his incorrigible way, wonders “If Tia can cure my baldness, will Alex give me a discount on the extra hair cuts I’ll need?”
