30 Years ‘Putting Us in the Picture’

BACK IN 1975, whilst living in Killiecrankie, Peter & Maria Barr needed to frame a selection of Maria’s water colour paintings. After considering various options, they decided to do the job themselves at home.

Highlands Studio was born, and it was not long before Peter began to frame a range of art work for customers throughout the Killiecrankie and Pitlochry area. So began an interest in picture framing that has extended over thirty years.

In 1980 Peter and Maria moved to England. Then, in 1987, they set forth with their family to live in Australia. Highlands Studio went with them.

In Australia Peter developed the business and also taught Framing on a Budget at the local technical college in Toowoomba, Queensland. In 2003 Peter & Maria returned to live in Scotland and brought the business ‘home’ to Killiecrankie.

“Over the years we’ve framed everything from watercolours, oil paintings, pastels, tapestries & cross-stitch to embroidery, Trompe l’Oeil, photographs, collages, 3-dimensional objects, calendars, posters, and sports shirts,” Peter (pictured here) told Comment.

“Effective framing depends on a sympathetic blend of materials and a careful balance of all the elements”, he added. “We stock a wide range of mouldings and mount-boards for all types of artwork.”

Maria uses her experience as an artist to recommend mouldings and mount-boards to bring out the best in any picture. “Choosing a really effective combination of materials really enhances a piece of artwork”, she explained. “The results are always good, often impressive”.

The cost of framing is an important consideration. For over thirty years Highlands Studio has sought to produce quality framing at a competitive price.
